“. It starts in 1905 when she and her husband, Pierre (Charles Berling), go to Stockholm to give their Nobel Prize lecture, then moves through his death and toward Marie winning her second Nobel. Those years were eventful, and Ms. Gruszka seems to be in constant, breathless motion, even when only maneuvering around a laboratory.”
“…Cinematographer Michal Englert employs a handheld camera, bringing an intimacy as well as a modern feeling to ensure that “Marie Curie” never feels stale. Noelle’s film doesn’t offer much historical context, but it’s a fascinating entry point for those unfamiliar with Curie’s personal life.”
In researching the film, Noëlle spoke with Marie Curie’s granddaughter, the nuclear physicist Hélène Langevin-Joliot. She actually married the grandson of Paul Langevin, with whom Marie Curie had an affair. “I thought it’s nice,” Noëlle said. “It’s as if love is an energy which does not get destroyed, it just jumps around.”
– Sonia Shechet Epstein, Sloan Science and Film
“For her it was very important to have this choice how she wanted to live, in what way. She wanted to decide on her own about her life, about her life in science but also about her private life. And that is a huge inspiration also for women today,”
– Karolina Gruszka, on playing Marie Curie
“…[this] evocative period detail greatly enhances Noelle’s selective and intimate portrait of a loving wife, mother and workaholic.”
